Why independent matters

Specialty markets, real comparisons.

Commercial insurance is where the gap between a captive agent and an independent broker shows up most clearly. A single carrier rarely has the appetite for every industry — your contractor coverage might be best at one insurer, your cyber at another, your professional liability at a third.

We have access to specialty markets and MGAs (Cansure, Totten, Special Risk and others) that most consumers cannot reach directly. That access changes what you pay and what you are actually covered for.

FAQ

Common questions about business insurance in Winnipeg.

What does a commercial general liability (CGL) policy in Winnipeg cover?
CGL is the foundation of most business insurance policies. It pays for third-party bodily injury and property damage you or your operations cause — a customer slipping in your store, a contractor damaging a client's property on a worksite, a product that injures someone after it leaves your hands. Limits typically start at $1 million per occurrence and scale up from there. Most Winnipeg landlord contracts, government tenders and commercial leases require proof of CGL before you can sign.
Is business insurance mandatory in Manitoba?
Manitoba does not require most businesses to carry insurance by statute, but in practice almost every business needs it. Commercial leases, mortgage agreements, government contracts and most major client agreements require proof of CGL and sometimes professional liability. Certain regulated industries — construction trades, transportation, professional services — have insurance requirements built into their licensing.
What's the difference between CGL and professional liability (E&O)?
CGL responds to physical injury and property damage. Professional liability — also called Errors & Omissions or E&O — responds to financial loss caused by professional advice, design or service: a missed deadline, a flawed report, a recommendation that costs the client money. Most service-based businesses in Winnipeg need both. We bundle them when the carrier allows and quote them separately when the bundle isn't competitive.
How much does small business insurance cost in Manitoba?
A basic CGL package for a low-risk Manitoba small business — consultants, retail, light office work — often starts at around $50 to $80 per month. Higher-risk industries (construction, hospitality, transportation) and revenue above a few hundred thousand a year push that up. The honest answer is we won't know until we quote, because pricing depends on industry code, revenue, claims history and the limits you choose.
Does my home-based business in Winnipeg need its own insurance?
Yes. A standard home insurance policy excludes business use almost entirely — if a delivery driver injures themselves on your porch dropping off supplies, or a client trips coming in for a meeting, the home policy will deny the liability claim. Home-based businesses need either a commercial endorsement on the home policy (for low-risk operations) or a separate CGL policy. We sort out which one fits.
What's commercial property insurance and do I need it if I rent my space?
Commercial property covers the building, contents, equipment, inventory and improvements. Even if you rent the space, your landlord's policy covers the building shell — not your tenant improvements, leasehold buildouts, equipment, or inventory. A tenant's commercial property policy fills that gap. Most Winnipeg commercial leases require it explicitly.
Can I bundle commercial property, liability, business auto and group benefits under one broker?
Yes — and we recommend it. Galaxy is appointed with the major Canadian commercial carriers, so we can package property, liability, commercial auto, cyber and group benefits under one brokerage relationship. One renewal date, one broker who knows your file, and a clear view of where coverages overlap or leave gaps.
