Insurance questions, answered plainly
The things Manitobans actually ask us — about Autopac, water damage, trucking files and claims. No jargon, no sales pitch. If your question is not here, call us and ask a broker directly.
Working with a broker
What is the difference between an insurance broker and an agent?
A broker works for you and compares policies from many insurers, while an agent works for one company and sells only that company's products. As an independent, broker-owned brokerage, we shop your coverage across 20+ Canadian carriers to find the right fit — an agent simply cannot do that. If you want options instead of one default policy, talk to a Galaxy broker.
Why should I use a Winnipeg insurance broker instead of buying directly online?
Buying online gets you one company's price on one company's wording. A broker gets you the whole market, and someone who reads the wording before you sign it. We compare 20+ carriers, explain where the coverage actually differs, and stay with your file at renewal and at claim time — which is when the difference shows up. It costs you nothing extra, because our compensation comes from the insurer rather than a fee on top of your premium.
Does using an insurance broker cost more than going direct?
No — using a broker does not cost you more, because our compensation comes from the insurer, not an added fee on your premium. You get expert advice and access to the whole market at the same price you would pay buying direct. The difference is that we compare carriers for you, which often lowers what you pay. Reach out and we will show you what your options look like.
I am a newcomer to Canada. How do I get auto and home insurance in Manitoba?
You can get insured here without a Canadian driving history — it just changes which carriers make sense for you. Bring your licence, any letter of experience from your previous insurer, and your immigration or permanent residency documents, and we will do the rest. Some insurers credit driving experience earned abroad, and knowing which ones is most of the work. We handle this every week in English, Hindi and Punjabi, so bring your questions in whichever language is easiest.
Do you offer insurance service in Hindi or Punjabi?
Yes — we offer full insurance service in English, Hindi and Punjabi at every one of our offices. You can review your policy, ask questions, and file paperwork in the language you are most comfortable with, with a broker who understands the details. This matters most when the coverage is complex. Visit any Galaxy office and we will look after you in your language.
Auto
Can a broker handle my MPI Autopac, or only optional coverage?
Yes — Galaxy brokers handle your MPI Autopac as well as any optional and excess coverage you add on top. We can process your Basic Autopac, set up extension coverage for higher liability limits, and bundle it with your home or business policy. One office, one conversation, your whole vehicle covered. Stop by any of our three Winnipeg-area locations to get started.
Do I really need Autopac extension coverage if I already have Basic MPI?
Basic Autopac covers you to a set liability limit and a set deductible, and for a lot of drivers that limit is lower than the damage a serious at-fault collision can do. Extension coverage raises your liability, lowers your deductible, and can add things Basic does not include, such as loss-of-use or coverage while you drive outside Manitoba. It is usually inexpensive relative to what it protects. Ask us to price a few limits so you can see the trade-off in real numbers.
How do I lower my car insurance in Manitoba?
You can lower your Manitoba car insurance by improving your Driver Safety Rating, choosing a higher deductible, and bundling your auto with home or business coverage. The MPI DSR scale now reaches a +20 level worth a 53% discount, so a clean driving record pays off more than ever. A broker can also place your optional and extension coverage with the carrier that prices it best. Talk to a Galaxy broker for a no-cost review of your current policy.
Home
How much is home insurance in Winnipeg?
Home insurance in Winnipeg varies widely based on your home's age, location, rebuild cost, and claims history, so there is no single price that fits everyone. Severe weather has pushed Prairie home renewals up around 11%, which makes shopping the market more valuable than ever. A broker can compare carriers to keep your premium reasonable without cutting the coverage you need. Ask us for a free home quote and we will give you a real number.
Do I need overland flood insurance for my Winnipeg home?
For most Winnipeg homeowners, overland flood insurance is strongly recommended, because standard home policies do not cover water that flows in over land. Manitoba's spring flood outlook shows elevated risk across the Interlake and Parkland, and provincial Disaster Financial Assistance will not pay out where overland coverage was available but not purchased. Skipping it can leave you fully exposed. We can check whether your policy includes it and add it if it does not.
Does my standard home insurance cover Winnipeg spring flooding or sewer backups?
Usually not — these are two separate add-ons, and a standard policy typically includes neither. Overland water covers rain and meltwater flowing in at ground level; sewer backup covers water coming up through your drains, which is the more common Winnipeg claim of the two. Carriers word and limit them differently, so having both named on your policy matters more than assuming you are covered. Send us your current policy and we will tell you exactly which of the two you have.
How can I reliably lower my home and auto insurance premiums?
The reliable levers are bundling home and auto with one carrier, raising your deductible to a level you could comfortably pay, keeping your claims history clean, and telling us about upgrades — a new roof, updated wiring or plumbing, or a monitored alarm all move the price. Beyond that, the single biggest lever is re-shopping the market at renewal rather than letting the policy roll over. That is the part we do for you, at no cost.
Commercial and trucking
What information do you need to provide a commercial trucking insurance quote?
To quote accurately we need your operating authority and safety fitness certificate, a unit list with VINs and values, your driver list with licence abstracts, your loss history for the past three to five years, and the details of what you haul and where. If you are running into the US, we also need your radius of operation and any filings you carry. Send what you have and we will tell you what is missing — we would rather start the conversation than wait for a perfect file.
How quickly can I get a certificate of insurance?
Same day in almost every case, and often while you wait if you come into an office. Certificates hold up job starts and loads, so we treat them as urgent rather than paperwork. Call or email the office handling your file with the certificate holder's details and the limits they are asking for, and we will turn it around.
Claims
What should I do if I need to file a home or business insurance claim?
Make sure everyone is safe first, then prevent further damage where you can — shut off the water, board up an opening — and keep the receipts, because those costs are usually covered. Photograph everything before you clean up, and do not throw damaged property away until it has been seen. Then call us. We will start the claim with your insurer, tell you what the adjuster will need, and stay on the file until it is settled rather than handing you a phone number.
